Ladies of Charity of Chattanooga Celebrates Banner Year

Members of the Ladies of Charity of Chattanooga (LOCC) gathered at St. Jude Catholic Church’s Siener Hall on Sun., Nov. 16 to celebrate one of the 45-year-old ministry’s most successful years. More than 60 volunteers attended the fall meeting, which celebrated the group’s many accomplishments, including a $250,000 capital campaign to purchase and renovate the new ministry headquarters on Rossville Boulevard. LOCC moved into the new location in January 2008. Within the first six months, the ministry doubled sales in its Greater Good Thrift Store, became debt-free with the sale of its Main St. property, and increased its direct and in-kind social assistance for people who fall through the cracks of the community's existing social service network. LOCC celebrated its more than 300 member volunteers whose generous support and tireless hours of service made the ministry's growth possible.

Wright's team has stocked, assembled and delivered 67 layettes for needy new mothers to date in 2008. The layettes contain clothing and baby supplies designed to meet the needs of a newborn for the first six weeks of life.

(Above) LOCC Board President Kay Parish (l) and Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors Volunteer Director Colleen Combs (r) recognized Alyce Ownby (c) for dedicating the most volunteer time to the ministry this year. As of the end of October, Ownby had already spent 678 hours working for the Ladies of Charity of Chattanooga.
